Yes. It is.
Trauma can happen at any time – when you’re 1, 8, 15, or 32…and anywhere in between. It may be mild, or it may be severe. The amount of stress you already have, your capacity to tolerate a shocking and painful event, and how supportive – or not – your immediate environment is all determine how well you are able to recover.
Birth trauma is made more complicated by the fact that it is believed that such events are not remembered. Parents can be somewhat comforted by the fact that the baby won’t remember or know anything about the surgery that happened 6 hours after her birth, or that baby boy will never know how ‘touch and go’ it was after a labour that didn’t progress that resulted in an emergency C-section.
The baby doesn’t often remember with their conscious mind; however, the experience is stored somewhere in their energy field and can have a significant effect on their lives.
All of our memories and experiences are stored in our energy field – everyone has one, it radiates from your heart and can be seen on various machines that read biofields and electromagnetic frequencies.
Working directly with a client’s energy field can resolve issues and events that aren’t consciously remembered and that happened at a time and age where there was no understanding of words or language – making it is impossible to talk about what happened and understand the consequences in the usual way. Such memories show up as ‘body memories’ or disturbing physical pains and sensations.
Traumatic pregnancy and birth events can appear as:
- unexplained pains body symptoms
- irrational fears
- a general attitude that is attributed to the child’s ‘unusual personality’
- nightmares
- extreme reactions to certain things
- sensory issues and sensitivities
- as a distance or melancholy that doesn’t make sense in a young, otherwise healthy child.
I consider the client’s birth story only when they have cleared other more obvious issues and when a good working relationship has been established. If symptoms are resistant or a repeated pattern of behaviour is present, I explore their birth story with them. This level of work is very deep, and processing can be difficult.
When the client is ready, they will access memories from their birth or from being in the womb – often as they process something else; and we may only need to work on a specific aspect of the experience to resolve a lifelong issue.
I have worked with clients, and observed others who have resolved issues such as:
- Umbilical cord around the neck – leading to a consistent feeling of being held back in life despite having support and opportunities.
- Feeling the stress of their mother in utero – leading to the conclusion that the world is not a safe place to be in. This set the tone for their whole life.
- Getting stuck in the birth canal – which lead to pervasive despair, the belief that ‘there is nothing I can do, I’m helpless.’
- The loss of a twin in utero and the grief / betrayal still present as an adult.
- Painful contractions causing a dissociative split from the body and a feeling of being excluded from everything despite wanting to be included.
- Being born the ‘wrong’ sex and concluding that ‘everything I do is somehow wrong’.
- Being adopted at birth but still carrying the pain of the wish for the love of the biological mother.
This work is both fascinating and sacred.

And this includes trauma. At any age.
