Twin Dynamics: Logosynthesis and the Quest for Individual Identity

Do you know anyone who is a twin? Are you one yourself? Twins share much more than their birthday: They share parents, life experiences, some friends, the ability to finish each other’s sentences, and occasionally, events that verge on telepathy…

Other people hold many assumptions about twins, things like:

  • the bond they share is unbreakable
  • that their parents treat them equally
  • that they like and enjoy the same things
  • that they are happy to share everything
  • they hold the same beliefs or political leaning
  • that they were both wanted and welcome
  • that they feel each other’s pain
  • that they like each other

The twin relationship is as fascinating as it is intricate. However, beneath the surface of all the similarities there are often complex dynamics at play regarding individual identity. Everyone seeks to differentiate themselves from other people, yet we still need to belong. This is most clearly seen in teenagers where they must be accepted by their social group but at the same time they want to be different and unique.

For twins, and other multiples too, the search for individual identity is usually tangled and merged with their sibling’s presence, there is a continual reminder, a static reference point, and a permanent reflection of what they are trying to separate from – making it difficult to know where one begins and the other ends. Twins can be uniquely challenged in the area of self-love and acceptance too.

Add to this the unique psychological pressures that twins face particularly relating to comparison, competition, and dependency. These dynamics can potentially lead to identity confusion, low self-esteem, and a sense of lostness that can seem out of place to the people looking in. One twin might suppress their desires to differentiate from the other or adopt a rigid role that keeps the peace in a volatile family setting. Twins may feel compelled to adopt opposing roles in order to assert themselves; or they may prefer one parent over the other in order to experience a unique attachment.

Such complexities may show up as feelings of incompleteness and loneliness when the twins are apart from each other, or as excessive dependence on the other for validation, security, and reassurance.

Add in complications such as mental health concerns, substance abuse, disability, or the death of a twin in some instances – and the dynamics become very complicated. This can still be true even when there is no longer physical contact with that twin.

So, what can help twins embrace their individuality while honouring their lifelong connection?

The twin bond is much more than emotional, its biological, spiritual, and energetic too. This is why it can be so difficult to unravel the issues between them and to resolve the more problematic outcomes that can occur.

Logosynthesis and Twin Work

Logosynthesis is an innovative energetic/therapeutic model that is used in therapeutic and coaching settings. It uses the healing power of words to facilitate change, and because it works with a person’s unique energy field and belief system, it is very effective when working with complex issues such as those confronted by twins and other multiples.

For twins, Logosynthesis can be particularly transformative. The model provides a framework to articulate and connect with the subconscious scripts, beliefs and patterns that dictate perceptions and interactions; this enables one or both twins resolve their own areas of frozen energy while at the same time removing the ‘clutter’ that interferes with their relationships.

Using the prescriptive and targeted phrases of Logosynthesis, practitioners can guide each twin (or anyone else) through a gentle process that untangles the complex issues and not only addresses the surface conflicts and complaints, but resolves the deeper emotional sticking points, thus facilitating profound and surprising levels of resolution and healing.

Application of Logosynthesis for Twins

In practice, and at the most basic level, Logosynthesis involves three primary steps that help individuals reclaim their energy and arrive at a state of flow. Here’s how these steps can specifically support twins in overcoming their issues. Working with one belief, issue, or event at a time:

  1. Energy Retrieval: The client is guided to retrieve the energy that belongs to them that has become mixed up with the person/situation/belief
  2. Energy Removal: The client is guided in removing the energy that does not belong to them from their energy field.
  3. Resolving emotional responses: The client is guided to retrieve all the energy that they have invested in having and maintaining an emotional reaction to the belief, issue, or event. Emotions use a lot of energy!

After this, the client is supported while they integrate the change they have just made. They often make new discoveries and are excited for how the future looks regarding the issue that they have worked on. Sometimes there are many layers, but all can be worked on in a similar way.

Logosynthesis offers a gentle yet powerful approach allowing for healthier, more autonomous interactions for anyone – not just twins.
